PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE: THE LORD IS HIS NAME

I want to ask you a question…”how many really satisfied people do you know?”  “Would you include yourself in that group? “People can have all the things of this world and not be satisfied. John Muir, the famous naturalist was in conversation one time with Mr. E. L. Harriman, a railroad magnate responsible for the push to complete the Cross Continental Railroad here in America. Muir said to Harriman “I’m richer than you are!” Harriman asked “how is that?” Muir told him quite matter-of-factly…”I have all I want and you do not-so I’m richer than you!”. Someone asked a billionaire “how much is enough” He answered just a little bit more!”

David was a satisfied man…because his satisfaction was not in himself…but in his all-sufficient LORD. So, he could sing from his heart, the first verse of Psalm 23, and mean it. “The LORD is MY Shepherd…I shall not want”.   David, by experience, knew that when he brought his sheep into the fold each night they were fed, watered, rested, anointed with oil on their wounds, secure in the fold, with all the other of the flock, with him lying across the doorway with his rod in hand. The sheep could sleep quietly all night satisfied with the care of their shepherd. They knew him. They trusted him. They had no unmet needs.

David knew and trusted the LORD. YAHWEH, (Jehovah), His Shepherd met all his needs. YAHWEH was the Personal Covenant name for God. A name so sacred that it was only pronounced with reverence once a year by the High Priest in the Holy of Holies. So Sacred when the Scribe copied Scripture…in order to copy that Holy name he put down his pen…and got a new one for writing THAT NAME. The Jews never spoke it out loud when reading Scripture. They replaced it with the name Adonay. In the KJV when you see LORD all capital letters you know it is the Name “YAHWEH”. When you see Lord…it is “Adonay”. It was David’s relationship with his Shepherd “YAHWEH” that was the source of his utter satisfaction. As a matter of fact, that is the key to the rest of the Psalm. David knew that God had revealed Himself as YAHWEH…explaining to Moses His name means “I AM”. I AM WHAT? ALL YOU NEED ME TO BE! Further revelation came in events that gave that explanation. David in Ps. 23:1 says the “LORD is my Shepherd” YAHWEH RA’AH. Gen. 22 God is revealed as YAHWEH-JIREH THE LORD THAT PROVIDES. Then Ex. 15 YAHWEH-RAPHA THE LORD THAT HEALS. Next YAHWEH SHALOM-OUR PEACE-Judges 6:24; YAHWEH TSIDKENU- OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS Jer. 23:6; YAHWEH NISSI-THE LORD OUR BANNER Ex. 17:15; Lastly YAHWEH SHAMMAH-THE LORD IS THERE EVER PRESENT. Ez. 48:35. David knew the LORD by all those names. THAT IS HIS SHEPHERD. ( RA’AH) I SHALL NOT WANT ( JIREH) HE MAKES ME LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES/STILL WATERS ( SHALOM) HE RESTORES MY SOUL(RAPHA) HE LEADS ME IN PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (TSIDKENU) HE PREPARES A TABLE IN PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES ( NISSI)…AND THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF DEATH THOU ART WITH ME AND DWELL IN HOUSE OF LORD FOREVER (SHAMMAH). David knew the LORD who lives up to HIs Name. A little girl misquoted the Psalm. “The LORD IS MY SHEPHERD…HE’S ALL I WANT!” David knew that…do you? You should HE’S YOUR SHEPHERD!

DAVID: HEART TO HEART

Psalm 25

I.     A CONVERTED HEART

II.    A CONSECRATED HEART

III.   A CONFESSING HEART

IV.   A CHALLENGED HEART

V.    A CONSTANT HEART.

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

On Wednesday nights We are studying together one of the well-known and beloved passages of all Scripture-Psalm 23.  Unfortunately, one of the great dangers is that we may be so familiar with the 23rd Psalm that we miss some of the beauties of David’s awe-inspiring song.

One time a botanist was out on his knees with a magnifying glass looking down at a little flower in a pasture. A big old brawn shepherd came and stood behind him. At first the botanist was not aware he was there. The shepherd had a smile on his face. To him it was ludicrous.  Here was a man on his hands and with a magnifying glass, looking at one little flower. When the botanist became aware of the shepherd’s presence he said, “come here and take a look at this”. The shepherd, took the magnifying glass inquisitively, kneeling to examine the little heather bell flower. He immediately gasped wow…and stood up with tears streaming down his face. The startled botanist asked, “why are you crying?”. He responded, “I knew they were there all the time…I trampled them underfoot many times without stopping to take the closer look…sadly I have missed their exquisite beauty all this time. That is the tragedy of familiarity. What we miss by not taking time for that closer deeper look! That tragedy is repeated many times over when we read those well-known passages. We read them rapidly without stopping to study the full intended meaning for maximum impact.

In the New Testament there are three words that clearly show this distinction. Don’t let ANYONE dissuade you from investigating the difference. The word “blepo” means to see in general-With no regard to understanding and comprehension. John arrived first at the tomb. He was hesitant to enter. He sized up the physical evidence of the grave clothes, from a distance, without close inspection. That is basic meaning of “blepo”. Peter arrives, and without hesitation, enters the tomb. He had a closer look. The word is “theoreo” means to see after close examination with the goal of comprehension. From this word we get “theory”-putting observations together to make a good guess. We get the word theater from it also. A place where you observe actions on screen and try to discern the story…to analyze the plot. Then John enters…to repeat Peter’s investigation. Text says “John saw”- a third Greek word-“orao”. They both saw-“blepo”; After that superficial observation Peter goes a step further-“theoreo”. But John, the Word says “looked and believed.  He took a third step. After a physical gaze (blepo) he looked deeper–for meaning (theoreo); Bit John went a little farther- He took evidence from the first exposure; sorted it out by a closer look; and closer review it came into focus, i.e., the body of Jesus was stolen. He arose

John believed! (John 20). That kind of study is what God expects of us, and is the best kind of study that inspired Scripture really deserves. Paul told his young Pastor-teacher Timothy “study to show himself approved of God” avoiding shame and maximize edification to completion. No wonder we miss the beauty of the Word during our hurried trampling Bible reading we are so used to by using lazy shallow technique. The word “study” means “apply yourself with diligent work and effort”. THAT is the only way to guarantee that we are “rightly dividing the Word of Truth”. The word “rightly dividing” is “orthotometo” Ortho-straight/tometo-to cut. i.e., “cut it straight so it fits the meaning”. That is what we are doing with Psalm 23. Seeing it; Sorting it; Solving it; Sharing it.

Psalm 23, was authored by David from his experience shepherding his father’s sheep at Bethlehem. Most believe it rejoiced in the LORD’S care of him all his days. Maybe he sang it most of his life in times of personal worship. David had a life of adventure. He sings praises for areas of God’s care as his Shepherd. You can approach It from many angles of emphasis. THE Lord is my Shepperd. Exalting Him as the only true God…The LORD…Jehovah…God’s personal covenant name. It means “I AM” all you need me to be.

The Lord IS my shepherd. Not would be…should be…but IS. Not was or will be…but IS NOW. MY shepherd. He knows me…my name…my needs…my nature. SHEPHERD. The one key person that is essential to the sheep. David…tell us…teach us…trust us. WE WILL LOVE AND FOLLOW HIM.

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE: A VITAL VISION FOR THE CHURCH-ONE NEEDED FOR REVIVAL?

A.W. Tozer wrote several years ago “If we, (who belong to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ), are ever going to bring back spiritual power to our lives-we must SEE God and Jesus AS THEY REALLY ARE!”.    We are told in First Peter that “having not seen Jesus, we love Him”. (I Peter 1:8).  We are also told that we serve a God who is invisible and “dwells in unapproachable light” (I Tim. 6:16). In Colossians 1:15 we are told that “Jesus Christ is the express image of that invisible God”.  We are also told in Hebrews 11:27 Moses “endured as seeing Him who is invisible”.  The question to be answered is then “how do we see Jesus Christ AS HE REALLY IS?”  One the very early reformers, Desiderius Erasmus, wrote a very interesting preface to his Greek New Testament.  He wrote, “The Bible will give you Christ…in an intimacy so close that He would be less visible if he stood before your eyes”. I believe that is true.  But I think that we have lost clear perception of the Christ that is revealed in Scripture.  Dr. Peter Kuzmic, President of the Evangelical Seminary in Osijek, Yugoslavia speaks to this issue.  He tells his students, “We must renew the credibility of the Christian Mission.  Missions and Evangelism are not primarily a question of Methodology, Money, and Management…but a question of authenticity, credibility, and spiritual power.  In going out to evangelize in Yugoslavia I frequently tell our seminary students that our main task may be to simply ‘wash the face of Jesus’ for it has been dirtied and distorted by the compromises of the institutional Christianity through the centuries and the angagonistic propaganda of athiestic communism in recent decades”.  That is not only true of Europe.  Even in America our perspective of the Jesus of Scripture has been dirtied and distorted by our failure to preach and teach the “truth about Him as presented in the Bible!”  Someone has written, “More than 1900 years ago there was a man born contrary to the laws of nature.  He lived in poverty and raised in obscurity.  He did not travel exclusively.  The only time He crossed the borders of His country was when He ventured into Egypt-as a child-fleeing Herod the Great.  His relatives were inconspicuous.  He had neither training nor formal education.  Yet in His Infancy-He startled a King.  in His Childhood-He confused the Scholars; In His manhood He ruled the course of nature; He walked on the billows of the sea as if it was paved sidewalk; He put the raging sea to sleep by His own lullabies; He healed the multitudes and did not charge them for His services; He never wrote a book, yet all the libraries in this country could not hold the volumes written about Him.  He never wrote a song-yet He has inspired more songs than anyone in history.  He never founded a college-yet all the schools of all time, cannot boast of more students than the multitudes that have been discipled at His feet.  He never marshalled an army, nor drafted a soldier, nor fired a gun, yet no leader has ever had that many followers follow Him, and been under His marching orders, then all the armies of the world, and men and women have surrendered to Him without Him firing a shot.  He never practiced psychiatry-yet He has brought healing and stability to more people than all the counselors in the world combined!  He stands on the highest pinnacle of Heaven’s glory. Proclaimed by God-Acknowledged by Angels-Adored by Saints-Feared by Demons!  The Living Lord Jesus Christ-Lord and Savior!”

H.G. Wells, the great historian, and not a Christian historian I might add, said that “historians give a test of greatness to men of history.  The big question is-what did they leave behind?  Did he start men to thinking in fresh lines?  Stimulate new vigor-followed after him? You judge the size of the ship by the size of the wake it leaves behind”.  What kind of wake did Jesus leave behind?  Bishop Stephen Neill, in his Interpretation of the New Testament, writes, “What kind of stone could it be that, once thrown into the pool of human existence could set in motion ripples that would go on spreading until the utmost rim of the world had been reached?” (p.19).   That is what Jesus did!  But have we lost that vision?  Do we still feel the awe and impact after these centuries? William Blake in his poem on The Vision of Christ doesn’t think so.

He wrote:  “The Vision of Christ that thou dost see

                                               Is my vision’s worst enemy.

Thine has a great hooked nose like thine

Mine a snubbed nose like mine!

Both of us read the Bible day and night-

You read it black, I read it white!”

Dorothy Sayers agrees with our distortion.  She says that the Church today has tamed the Biblical Christ.  She wrote:  “The Church has very efficiently clipped the claws of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah…and certified Him as a safe household pet for pale curates and old ladies!”  H.A. Ironside said that it is dangerous for Christians to traffic in unfelt truth.  In other words, we may know Jesus…without really KNOWING the Jesus of the New Testament in the fulness that we need!  IN OTHER WORDS, THERE MAY BE A GAP BETWEEN OUR VISION AND OUR VENTURE-BETWEEN OUR DOCTRINE AND OUR DUTY-BETWEEN OUR POSITION AND OUR PRACTICE-BETWEEN OUR PERSPECTIVE AND OUR PERFORMANCE!  When the Apostle John, banished to the Isle of Patmos, saw a vision of Christ, he was so awe-struck that he shared a transforming message to the Churches.  Perhaps we need to get a glimpse of that glory again.  Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade of Christ had such a life transforming vision.  He visited Scotland in 1947.  He spent time with the great N.T. scholar James Stewart.  Stewart told him-“Bill if we can show the world that being committed to Jesus Christ is not tame, humdrum, sheltered monotony-but instead the most exciting thrilling adventure a human spirit can ever know.  Those standing outside the Church looking in-wondering who Jesus is-will instead come in-crown Him King-pay allegiance to Him-and we will see the greatest revival THIS SIDE OF PENTECOST!”    That can still be true for us today.  We need a renewed and refreshed vision of Our Lord.
